Why Beekeeping Needs a New Name

By Candice KosebaJan 2, 2024

What's in a Name?

Beekeeping. It's a term that has been used for centuries to describe the practice of raising bees and harvesting their honey. But is it time for a change? Many experts in the field believe so. They argue that the term "beekeeping" doesn't accurately reflect the true nature of the work involved, nor does it convey the importance of bees to our ecosystem. So, what should we call it instead?

The Case for "Bee Steward"

One proposed alternative is "bee steward." This term emphasizes the role of beekeepers as stewards of the bees, rather than mere keepers. It highlights the responsibility we have to protect and care for these vital creatures. Bee stewards also recognize that bees are not just a resource to be exploited, but living beings that deserve our respect and support.

Sonoma County Bee Company's Approach

Sonoma County Bee Company is leading the way in redefining beekeeping. We have embraced the concept of "natural beekeeping," which goes beyond traditional practices to create a more sustainable and bee-friendly environment. Natural beekeeping focuses on restoring and enhancing the natural habitat of bees, rather than simply managing them for honey production.

Supporting Hives in Their Natural Habitat

Sonoma County Bee Company works to provide bees with a diverse range of forage options by planting native wildflowers and other bee-friendly plants. We also prioritize the preservation of natural habitats, such as meadows and woodlands, which are essential for bees to thrive. By supporting hives in their natural habitat, Sonoma County Bee Company ensures that bees have access to the resources they need to stay healthy and productive.

The Power of a Name

Changing the name of beekeeping to "bee steward" may seem like a small step, but it has the potential to shift our mindset and approach towards bees. It reminds us that we have a duty to protect and support these incredible creatures. In an era marked by environmental challenges such as habitat loss and climate change, the role of beekeepers in conservation is increasingly significant. Many beekeepers advocate for sustainable practices, habitat restoration, and the protection of bee populations from threats such as pesticides and diseases. A revised name could acknowledge this conservation aspect, positioning beekeepers as guardians of biodiversity and environmental stewards. For now, we are proud to be beekeepers and aren’t looking to petition for a new name but it’s worth thinking about and at least bringing to light the importance of what beekeeper are responsible for.
